Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes spoke about Proposition 8 at a rally sponsored by the LGBT Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. She spoke about the galvanizing effect of the passage of the proposition, in terms of motivating gays and their supporters to fight for equal marriage rights.
Sykes also spoke about the fallacy of calling a gay identity a choice: "Are we saying that if being gay is a choice that people are straight because they chose not to be gay?" The reason, of course, that it's called a choice is that it gives those who despise gays a reason to blame them for their orientation.
This "choice" business is nonsense. Personally, I can't remember a point in my life when I decided to be a straight male. One's sexuality is too instinctive to be based on a rational decision. So why is this straight male so outraged by the passing of Proposition 8? Because it is so blatantly based on prejudice and a denial of civil and human rights.
By the way, you can catch Wanda Sykes in the outstanding and curmudgeonly TV comedy, "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
