America Lives Up To Its Ideals By Repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

America lived up to its ideals today as the Senate voted to repeal "don't ask, don't tell." That disastrous 17-year-old policy forced thousands of gay men and women to live a lie or be thrown out of the military due to sexual orientation.

Praise is due to President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Reid, Defense Secretary Gates, Admiral Mike Mullen, the Democrats and the eight Republicans who joined them. Though I'm no fan of his, Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) must also be commended, along with Senator Susan Collins (R-MN), for encouraging Democrats to make one last effort. Lieberman rightfully said, "We righted a wrong. Today, we served justice."

There are, as always, those like Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) who stand on the wrong side of history, justice and equality. Government-enforced discrimination and treating gays as second-class citizens deserve to be swept aside. The military and the country were well served today.
