Remembering Captain Beefheart

Rock musician and painter Don Van Vliet, also known as Captain Beefheart, passed away yesterday at 69. Both NPR and The New York Times noted that he evolved into an avant-garde musician rooted in the blues. The Times referred to Captain Beefheart's most famous album with his Magic Band, "Trout Mask Replica" (1969), as "A bolt-from-the-blue collection of precise, careening, surrealist songs with clashing meters, brightly imagistic poetry and raw blues shouting..." This mixture of the blues with the surreal is evident in the performance above of "Ice Cream for Crow."
