Sen. Specter Criticizes Supreme Court, Right Wing In Final Speech

In his parting address, Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA), a former Republican, slammed the Roberts Supreme Court for its ruling in Citizens United, an outrageous act of conservative judicial activism that rejected all campaign spending limits. Specter also criticized right-wing extremism, stating "President Reagan's big tent has frequently been abandoned by the Republican Party."

Specter: "The recent decision in Citizens United is illustrative. Ignoring a massive congressional record and reversing recent decisions, Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito repudiated their confirmation testimony given under oath and provided the key votes to permit corporations and unions to secretly pay for political advertising - thus effectively undermining the basic Democratic principle of the power of one person, one vote. Chief Justice Roberts promised to just call balls and strikes–and then he moved the bases."
