Stewart, Smith Outraged At Republican Block Of 9/11 Health Bill For First Responders

Jon Stewart expressed outrage at Republican senators who are blocking the 9/11 Health Bill or James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, named after a New York City police detective who participated in ground zero rescue efforts and died in 2006 of breathing complications. Watch as Stewart criticizes "the party that turned 9/11 into a catchphrase" and wants to give the wealthy tax breaks that will cost $700 billion over a decade–yet is concerned about paying $7.4 billion to care for 9/11 first responders:

Stewart later spoke with four 9/11 first responders, who expressed disbelief that those who put their lives on the line for the country are being denied the urgent health care they need:

Stewart criticized Fox News for its lack of coverage; however, Shepherd Smith, who is an exception to the network's usual right-wing commentators, angrily spoke about this "national disgrace." Smith mentioned Stewart's commentary approvingly as he spoke to a sympathetic Chris Wallace:
