Rachel Maddow poses an excellent question: If Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) should resign, what about Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)? Consider: Vitter co-authored the “Federal Marriage Amendment” whose purpose is to discriminate against gays. Weiner never ran as a sanctimonious "family values” candidate. Vitter, while "defending" marriage, was a regular client of the D.C. Madam’s prostitution services. As creepy and shameful as Weiner’s Tweets were, he never had actual adulterous sex with a prostitute or anyone else. So why, on the very night that Republicans and Democrats were calling for Weiner’s resignation, was Vitter being toasted at a fundraiser on his behalf? Why did the chairman of the Republican Party call on Weiner to resign but refused to “relitigate” Vitter? Why does the Republican National Committee state that Democrats should return Weiner’s “tainted cash” while saying nothing about campaign contributions from Weiner’s Louisiana Reform PAC? Watch:
Maddow: To everyone calling for Anthony Weiner’s resignation, everyone, left, right and center: Do you have a David Vitter problem? Ask yourself: have you ever called for David Vitter to resign–ever? Are you comfortable calling for Anthony Weiner’s resignation while David Vitter still sits there happily in the Senate?
