Saturday Night At The Liberal Curmudgeon: Paul Simon’s “The Afterlife”

Paul Simon and a stellar band rehearse “The Afterlife” from his fine new album, “So Beautiful or So What.” According to the lyrics, even in heaven one has to put up with bureaucracy: “You got to fill out a form first, then you wait in the line”–and even “Buddha and Moses…had to stand in the line just to glimpse the divine.” Once one does glimpse the divine, one is unable to utter nothing more than the doo-wop phrases Simon heard as a child of the 1950s: “Lord, is it 'be bop a lula'? Or 'ooh papa doo'?” Regardless of such cosmic mysteries, Simon and fellow musicians clearly delight in the rhythms they create.
