Matt Rothschild: U.S.-Backed Karzai Gov't. Endorses Women's Oppression

Matt Rothschild (left), editor of The Progressive, notes the bitter irony of American military support for President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan. Karzai recently endorsed a “code of conduct” issued by the clerical Ulema Council allowing husbands to beat their wives based on "sharia-compliant reasons" and encouraging segregation of the sexes. When the war started a decade ago, its supporters cited the Taliban's brutal treatment of women as a justification. While the code is supposedly voluntary, many Afghan women fear "a green light for Talibanisation" on the part of a president trying to appeal to fundamentalists. Karzai's stance comes amid a sharp drop in support for the war, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. Listen as Rothschild comments on how "the U.S. is now supporting a government that officially declares women to be second-class citizens":
