Remembering Bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn (1941-2012)

Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bassist for Stax Records’ house band, Booker T. and the MG’s, recently passed away. The band accompanied Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Albert King and other artists associated with Stax, a label that provided a more raw sound than soul rival Motown during the 1960s. Above, the MG’s play their hit “Time is Tight” in 1970. Dunn is first seen laying down the driving bass line at 1:18. Listen to an extended tribute to Dunn on St. James Infirmary, hosted by my good friend Dr. Michael Mand.

The list of Dunn's accomplishments reads like an encyclopedia of rhythm & blues and rock & roll. Thanks for the plug. Lesson of the day: MG stands for Memphis Group.

You're welcome. I'd mentioned that lesson when I featured Booker T and the MGs.
