Saturday Night At The Liberal Curmudgeon: Van Morrison Performs “Astral Weeks”

Van Morrison performed the eight songs from his classic “Astral Weeks” album 40 years after its release, at the Hollywood Bowl, November 2008. Above he sings the title track whose lyrics set the stage for this stream-of-consciousness collection: "If I ventured in the slipstream between the viaducts of your dream... Could you find me?"

This is yet another example of a recent trend of which I don't necessarily disapprove - that of performing an entire album in concert. Pink Floyd performed DARK SIDE OF THE MOON quite often. Brian Wilson performed both, PET SOUNDS and SMILE; Lou Reed performed BERLIN; Ian Anderson performed both AQUALUNG and THICK AS A BRICK. The list goes on. Phish performed many albums originally attributed to others. ASTRAL WEEKS is consedered by many, myself included, to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time and is certainly deserving of such treatment by its architect and builder. The fact that Morrison has maintained a level of excellency when he set the bar so high so early in his career is a remarkable achievement. A worthy choice...even from a curmudgeon.

You don't necessarily approve, but you don't say why. What's wrong with performing all the music from a seminal album? Yet then you write that "Astral Weeks...is certainly deserving of such treatment by its architect and builder." I agree with that, and therefore feel that it is worthy of being performed in its entirety.

If I am not mistaken, and I don't believe I am, I wrote that I don't necessarily DISapprove. It was a very "cool" way of saying that I rather like this trend. And the host of St. James Infirmary is nothing if he is not cool. Actually, I really appreciate the support I get from The Liberal Curmudgeon.

I apologize; I misread your comment. Your coolness, of course, is indisputable.
