Rep. Todd Akin: "Legitimate Rape" Victims Rarely Get Pregnant

Rep. Todd Akin, Republican senatorial candidate running against Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, stated in an interview today that "legitimate rape" victims have biological defenses against pregnancy. He contended, “First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Arguing against abortion even if the victim becomes pregnant, Akin said, “Let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.” As of this writing, Akin is leading McCaskill 49.7 to 41.3 percent.
