Saturday Night At The Liberal Curmudgeon: Joni Mitchell Live

Joni Mitchell performed her "Big Yellow Taxi," complete with a Bob Dylan imitation, on the Warner Brother's lot in Los Angeles, 1998. The song's theme is epitomized by a question worth contemplating: "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone?"

In the past I've been unfairly critical of Joni Mitchell as being elevated to a level of esteem that is not deserved. I've softened my position over the years. Her body of work is rather impressive, as evidenced by some impressive albums as well as multiple cover versions of her songs, and her style of entertainment cannot be questioned; and here is a perfect example. On the other hand, should she really be considerred on the same level as Bob Dylan, whom, as you point out, she imitated rather amuzingly in this video? I don't think so. The listeners of stations such as WFUV in NYC disagree with me.

I'm not sure if anyone in contemporary music is as great a songwriter as Bob Dylan; however, I'm among those listeners who disagree with you that Joni Mitchell is not on his level. Consider "The Circle Game" and the entire album "Blue," for example–masterpieces!
