GA GOP Chair: Straights Will Enter Gay Marriages For Health Benefits

Georgia Republican chairwoman Sue Everhart warned that marriage equality will result in straights pretending to be gay in order to receive health benefits. According to Everhart, it's not about equality; "'s all about a free ride." Now we know why so many crafty straight people suddenly support gay marriage:

You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” Everhart said. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.

In fairness, this may, indeed, occur. Marriages of convenience have been a fact of life for heterosexuals forever. But I suspect that the frequency of Ms. Everet's example would be so small as to be insignificant.

Marriage equality is a civil rights issue, pure and simple.

I think there's more chance for straights to enter straight marriages of convenience. Regardless, Everhart's theory is no reason to continue denying civil rights and equal justice to millions of people.
