Matt Rothschild: New Carbon Dioxide Level Is Disastrous

Matt Rothschild, editor of The Progressive, comments on news that that level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached 400 parts per million, the highest in millions of years, and anticipates the environmental disasters to come. Regardless, oil and mining companies resist regulations while Congress and world leaders dither. Listen:

The problem is that the people who are causing the problem will not be around to suffer its consequences. That is why society feels no urgency. I'm reminded of the midrash about the old man planting a tree: He was asked if he really expected to live long enough to consume the fruits of his labor. His reply: "I was born into a world flourishing with ready pleasures. My ancestors planted for me, and I now I plant for my children..." Sadly, we've lost that sense of generational responsibility.

Agreed. Another problem is our corrupt political system, in which lawmakers hold on to their seats by kowtowing to polluters.
