Saturday Night At The Liberal Curmudgeon: Remembering Yusef Lateef

Yusef Lateef, innovative jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer and music professor, passed away on Monday. Lateef was among the first to play "world music," incorporating influences from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Above, Lateef played flute on his sinuous composition "Metaphor" at the Jazz à Vienne Festival, France, 2006.

Although I've enjoyed listening to jazz thanks mostly to my father (more traditional jazz) and to joy (modern jazz), I'm not as intimately familiar with many of the individual artists - even those considered the giants of jazz. (I guess one brain can only handle so much information.) Yusef Lateef is an exception, and if you listen to SJI this Friday, you'll find out why. Another great choice for TLC.

Thanks. Wish you'd paid tribute to Yusef Lateef in your latest show. I'd have given you a plug.
