Powell: GOP Must Appeal To More Than Its Base

General Colin Powell, a Republican, spoke to Bill Maher about his party's sharp turn to the right. He said that if it wants to win presidential elections, it has to appeal to more than just its base; it must appeal to minorities, who will be the majority in 20 years. In addition, the GOP must learn to compromise. Will Republicans listen to Powell? Watch:

By the way, that is exactly what Ronald Reagan said about the Democratic Party. He eventually bolted for the Republicans. I wish Powell would have done similarly and become a Democrat. A gesture such as that could send a strong message.

Yes it would, but to no avail. Powell is a member of a species all but extinct: the moderate Republican. His bolting wouldn't moderate today's GOP.
